Unfortunately,
it is impossible to predict the rate of progression in a person diagnosed
with Keratoconus. The factors that cause progression are not known.
Progression can vary from person to person. The disease may advance
rapidly and stop as suddenly as it started only for this cycle to
repeat months or years later. Instead of a cycle, it may gradually
advance slowly for 10 to 20 years and then remain stable. Keratoconus
progression is normally measured in years rather than weeks or months. Some
doctors believe that there is a relationship between the onset of
the disease and the severity of the disease. One factor that has been
linked, although not proven, is eye rubbing. This has been said to
increase progression. Many doctors recommend that KCer's abstain from
eye rubbing. Any surgery that weakens or thins the cornea can also
increase progression. Cosmetic eye surgery such as LASIK should never
be performed on a Keratoconic eye. Factors such as heavy and prolonged
computer use and general eye strain have not been linked to Keratoconus
progression.
